Flatbed trailer is one of the most common types of trailers. These trailers can be utilized for everything from steel coils to lumber. It is an open container, i.e. there are no containing boxes to cover the cargo being shipped.
- Dry Vans
Dry vans or enclosed trailers are a flatbed with a box around it. These are a weatherproof alternative to store the load in a dry environment. Grocery stores generally use dry vans to ship goods such as clothes, electronics, and food.
- Refrigerated Trailer
Refrigerated trailers are primarily dry vans but are insulated. They have a cooling system to keep the stored goods fresh. This type of trailer is mainly used for frozen foods. Sometimes pharmaceutical goods are also shipped via reefers.
- Lowboy Trailers
The lowboy trailers are the beast of a choice for hauling heavy loads which are taller than the legal height for other trailers. These are often used for heavy-duty construction equipment.
- Step Deck Trailers
Step deck trailers are closely similar to flatbed trailers. The only difference is that the maximum freight height of a step-deck trailer is 10 feet. They are designed to carry things that can not be carried by flatbed trailers.
- Extendable flatbed trailers
These trailers are exactly what they sound like. They are flatbeds that can stretch long from about 43-foot to 80 feet. The extendable flatbed trailers are equipped to support long loads, so one does not have to worry about the load hanging off the edge of the trailer.
- Extendable double drop trailers
The extendable double drop trailers are used to carry items that are significantly longer and can’t be transported using a regular double drop trailer. The most commonly carried items include freight containers and construction equipment.
- Multi-car trailers
These trailers are so common that it’s imperative to mention them. They are technically specialty carriers having varying requirements based on the state you’re in. They can carry from two vehicles up to eight cars anywhere. Once the vehicles are on the trailer, the driver will triple-check that the vehicles remain in place for the haul.
Thus, each type of truck and trailer differs from the next and has multiple applications. You need to find the truck or trailer which fits your application.
